Chapter Eight
Her days took on a routine. She spent her mornings in her penmanship exercises, working her way up to calligraphy. The curator had found a musician who wanted to use her poetry to wrap his music around. He was willing to take on any of her work, and she had already signed a contract for a share of the proceeds of the work. She had time.
She spent her afternoons and evenings as a docent in the gallery. To her astonishment, after four days there, there was a waiting lineup that had to be restricted to twenty people at a time for the tours. Anyone could go in on their own, but if they wanted to cluster around her, they had to wait their turn. It was unlikely, but she was popular.
Eltrinia was popular and had no idea how to deal with it, so she went to work each day and explained the deep, dark histories of the items on loan, to the public.
There was a knock at the door after breakfast, and she paused, putting her pen into the safe holder so that she would not get ink everywhere.
She walked to her door and opened it. The curator was smiling. “Eltrinia, I need you to take a morning shift for some VIPs today.”
“Oh, certainly. I will just clean up my calligraphy, and I can head down there immediately.”
“You have an hour, so take your time.”
“An hour? That is barely enough time to wrestle with my hair!” She inclined her head with a smile. “I am learning.”
The curator winked and held up a single finger. “One hour.”
Eltrinia smiled. “I will be ready.”
The curator left her, and Eltrinia got ready, changing into one of the sleeved, skirted vests before she pinned her hair in a loose twist wound with small braids.
Scrubbing ink off her hands was difficult, but the lightning could do that for her as well. She ran a fine coil of the electricity up her body, and it cleansed her as well as helped her with her sensitivity. With each passing day, her skin thickened. She was near to the point where she could touch a teacup instead of simply the handle.
She smoothed her hands down her hips and checked herself in the mirror. She just had to put her badge on, and she was ready to go.
Eltrinia left her quarters and walked the halls that led from the curator’s private and guest quarters, over the arboretum, and down across the main floor of the museum. She smiled and waved at the few friends that had made an effort to get to know her. They worked or volunteered, depending on their social status. There were even two dragons on the payroll, but Eltrinia was pretty sure that they didn’t know they were dragons. Without the family connections that would make evolution into their full forms a rite of passage, they were stuck waiting until a dragon female called their beast out, just as Eltrinia was.
The attendant at the snack bar beckoned her over.
